CHAPTER FOUR

A stroll to the hotel a few blocks away was the only option. The plan was that they'd ask for a tire jack, fix the tire and be on their way. But rural Mississippi in the early sixties had a way of upsetting the simplest of plans.

"You can't bring her in here, fella. Sorry, you just can't."

This was the large man behind the desk. The smaller, younger man said nothing.

"We just came to ask – "

"Look, we run things respectably here. You got you a whore you need to settle down with, you best head over to Red Valley. Do your business there. I'm sorry."

"I don't think you understand," Kyle said.

"We understand enough. Good day, sir."

This was too much. Sabrina, sensing the fight in Kyle's eyes, roped him back. But something was changing in the younger man's face. Something close to a smile crept up to him, sent him into conference with the large man. After a few hushed words, they returned to the desk, attired in matching grins.

"Right this way, Miss La Roux," the large man said.

"We don't need a room. We've got a flat tire and we were wondering – "

"No problem at all, ma'am. Tommy, take care of that, will you?"

Sabrina led the smaller man to the car. He grabbed a jack and hopped behind her.

"I'm going down to the sweet shop…" he sang.

Sabina didn't sing along.

Kyle grabbed a map from the desk, studied it in angry silence. The Large man looked exhausted from smiling so much. Tommy stepped back in, jack tucked under his arm, still chirping like a choirboy.

"Miss La Roux's waiting in the car. Said something about the air being better out there."

Kyle backed out of the hotel, answering their waves with narrowed eyes that promised an unpleasant retribution.

She was only alone in the car for a second. But that was all it took for trouble to creep up and find her. From a distance he couldn't make things out very clearly, but he could see a crowd gathering around the car. They looked like unhappy businessmen and they were closing in a like a swarm of hornets.

Charging in would be a bad move, a headfirst dive into the great whale's belly. He chose to creep up slowly, through the bushes, under the night's generous blanket of darkness. Ten, maybe fifteen feet away now. Close enough to hear a little:

"There's something we need to talk about, darling. Something that can't wait much longer," Mister Rialto said.

He could see some details now too. Sabrina's lower lip fighting off a little girl's quiver; Mister Rialto's hands of stone curling into impatient fists; Rat, staying behind the pack, twirling his revolver like a cowboy.

Kyle's gaze closed in. Maybe he could catch the fake John Wayne in mid-twirl…

He raced in, gave a chop to Rat's head, sent the gun to ground.

"No!" Sabrina screamed.

The others lurched for their guns. Too late. Kyle put the barrel in Mister Rialto's face, yanked back on the trigger. Click, click, click, click. Four shots fired; none released.
